The United States Postal Service put out this stamp to celebrate the annual flowering of the dogwood trees, which is an iconic springtime event in the D.C./metropolitan area. This artistry is lovely and I do enjoy the strengthening of ties to Japan. The message that accompanies that stamps states that “…their stunning displays of color and rich history for the U.S. and Japan, these trees remain symbols of the deep bond between our nations.”
It’s nice on the surface, of course, but it’s hard not to forget the terrible sacrifices made when we fought each other. The Capitol Building on this stamp is what we want our government to look like, but unfortunately the reality is quite different.
