Photo: Roosevelt Island in Washington, D.C.
Although I admire Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation policies and creation of many national parks (hence, why this island is seen as a living memorial), he played a big role in de-stabilizing parts of Latin America and had an active love of warfare and violence. He certainly was quite a remarkable person, and as much as I love the monuments in D.C., I can never quite shake the unease with which we idolize very, very flawed people. But, we’ve been doing this for thousands of years, so it seems pretty ingrained in human societies across time and space. Alas.
